For a few seconds this afternoon the sun came
out and the trail blazed
with glory.

Then it started
raining again.

Through the years, people from Colorado or Arizona or even Scotland have posed the same question: "When you're riding, what the hell is there to see in Central Illinois?" So here is my defense of the flatlands. Or maybe it's a defense of getting outside and discovering what's there. As the coffee mug says, "No matter where you go — there you are."
